CAMPUS HEADLINES; News article, University of California, Berkeley

For Tommy Chen, a freshman, navigating his way through Upper Sproul Plaza and its throng of Asian-American student groups last month was a change of pace but not a change of scenery for the San Jose, Calif., native. Chen, who graduated from Lynbrook High School, which is around 70 percent Asian-American, said stepping onto campus was like having déjà vu.

Chen is one of nearly 2,000 Asian-American freshmen entering the university this year, a record high for the campus. According to preliminary enrollment figures, Chinese-American students top the list with an enrollment of nearly 1,000, making up one-fourth of the campus's fall freshman class. But as figures come closer to reaching a majority, students like Chen said they worry the Asian-American presence on campus is ballooning too quickly.

''[The campus should be] at least diverse in proportion to the U.S. population,'' he said, ''and I'm pretty sure it's not 50 percent Asian.''
